Shaker Heights

Overview

Shaker Heights, Ohio, is a beautiful inner suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, just eight miles from downtown and minutes from the cultural, academic, and vibrant University Circle area. Shaker Heights is known for its tree-lined streets, architecturally inspiring and inviting homes of all sizes, and multiple recreational offerings. Moreover, it is a model city recognized for its city services, green spaces and excellent school system. Approximately 30,000 people call Shaker Heights “home.”

There are nine neighborhoods that comprise Shaker Heights that include Boulevard, Fernway, Lomond, Ludlow, Malvern, Mercer, Moreland, Onaway, and Sussex. These neighborhoods were originally named for the elementary schools in each of their communities. Shaker Heights also has a unique public transportation system. There are two light rail train lines lines that offer quick and easy access to downtown, all of the sports venues, the Cleveland waterfront area, and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Shaker Heights hosts numerous activities and events for people of all ages including the North Union Farmers Market, Shaker Arts Council Annual Summer Solstice Festival, Bark in the Park and Doggie Dip, and Shaker Square Summer Concerts. Thornton Park offers residents a heated outdoor pool, ice arena, playground, skateboard park, tennis courts, outdoor basketball court, batting cages, and walking paths. In addition, the Shaker Heights Public Library offers a myriad of programs, classes and events for adults, teens and children.

Shaker Heights Schools

The Shaker Heights City School District is comprised of five elementary schools, one upper elementary school, one middle school and one high school. The District is renowned for its continued commitment to educational excellence and has had impressive numbers of National Merit Scholarship winners throughout the years. In 2008, the District boasted twice as many winners than any other public school in the state. There are also private, independent schools in the community with outstanding reputations including Laurel School, Hathaway Brown School and University School (K-8).
